Project 11540 TFR is a multi-purpose ship that provides air defense for the operational formation of ships from enemy ships and submarines. A patrol ship of this class was designed and built at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. The first in the series was the Fearless TFR, which was launched in 1993. The other two were laid down - "Yaroslav the Wise" (in some reports it bears the name "Impregnable") was laid down in 1991 and "Fog" was laid down in the summer of 1993. This ship is a further development of the well-proven Project 1135 patrol ships, 24 of which were built during from 1969 to 1993. Project 11540 TFR is the first Russian universal security ship built using low-reflective materials.

The ship is armed with the Vodopad-NK missile-torpedo system, which fires both anti-submarine missiles and torpedoes. Ammunition - 6 anti-submarine missiles or torpedoes with a range of up to 120 km. Two triple-tube horizontal launchers are installed on each side in the direction of the bow of the ship and a fixed elevation angle of about 20 °.

The complex of anti-ship missiles "Uranus" includes two eight-container launchers with 16 K-35 anti-ship missiles and an automated control system. The K-35 missile is equipped with an inertial control system that provides control of the missile in flight, and an active radar guidance head that provides detection, guidance and destruction of the target. The missile guidance system has a high survivability against enemy electronic countermeasures. To successfully overcome the enemy's anti-missile defense system, the missile has a small reflective surface and a low flight path. In the initial phase, the flight altitude is 10-15 m above sea level, but in the phase of approaching the target, the rocket at a speed of 280-300 meters per second decreases to a height of 3-5 m above sea level. The minimum and maximum flight ranges are from 5 to 130 km. Flight weight - 603 kg.

The Klinok air defense system protects the ship from anti-ship missiles, unmanned and manned aircraft, enemy ships, as well as coastal-based weapons. Four vertical launch modules are installed in the bow of the ship behind the ship's 100 mm gun. The complex consists of an automated fire control system and an under-deck launcher with four drums, each with eight 9M330 missiles (32 missiles). The missile is a naval version of the SA-15 missile.

To obtain data for firing, the complex includes a detection radar and an interface with the ship's combat control system. The radar uses a phased array antenna with electronic control. Range - from 12 to 15 km and target height - from 10 to 6000 meters. The missile is equipped with a 15 kg warhead, can hit 4 targets simultaneously at a speed of up to 700 meters per second and a rate of fire of 3 missiles per second.

Rocket and artillery air defense system "Kashtan" - developed by the Tula Design Bureau. The system provides defense against precision weapons, including anti-ship, anti-radar missiles, aerial bombs, aircraft and small ships. The system has a modular design. One command module and two modules - a combined rocket-artillery mount with an ammunition capacity of 64 rockets and 600 rounds, located on each side of the satellite communications dome. The command module provides fully autonomous target detection, target data output and target distribution to launchers. The combined rocket-artillery mount automatically receives target designation, accompanies the target, calculates the target parameters and uses the weapon. Surface-to-air missiles are launched from a container (launcher), the artillery mount is a twin 30 mm anti-aircraft gun. The system provides radar and laser (for missiles) target tracking modes. Firing range - from 1.5 to 8 km and artillery installation - 0.5-1.5 km for altitudes from 5 to 4000 meters. Target speed up to 600 m/s. The rate of fire of the artillery mount is up to 1000 rounds per minute.

The RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher is part of the Smerch-2 anti-submarine defense system. The fixed launcher RBU-6000 is installed on the upper deck behind four covers of the Klinok launcher complex. Launcher of twelve radially placed tubes, firing data comes from the Burya fire control system. Ammunition of 96 missiles is located under the launcher. Missiles are loaded automatically through the elevator. When the last tube is loaded, the launcher automatically switches to firing mode. After using all missiles, the launcher automatically returns to the loading position. The maximum firing range is 6000 meters and the maximum target depth is 500 meters. The weight of the rocket is 110 kg and the weight of the warhead is 25 kg.

The AK-100 system with 350 rounds of ammunition is installed in the bow of the ship and is designed to destroy air, sea and coastal targets, including anti-ship missiles. The AK-100-MP-145 artillery mount was developed by the Amethyst Design Bureau in Moscow, the Arsenal Design Bureau and the Industrial Association in St. Petersburg. The system also includes a computer complex with a radar and television detection and tracking channel. The artillery mount is equipped with a "Condenser" optical sight. Fire control can be automatic - from the fire control complex, semi-automatic - from the Condensor optical sight and in manual mode, and the supply of ammunition in manual mode is provided through elevators and automatic feed mechanisms. The artillery installation is serviced by a team of 5 or 6 people. Rate of fire 30 - 50 rounds per minute, range 20 kilometers.

The ship is equipped with eight PK-10 ten-tube launchers to provide protection against heat-seeking weapons. Fires 120mm thermal noise projectiles. Undermining shells can be automatic or single-handedly in manual mode. The ship is also equipped with two 16-pipe PK-16 installations for jamming weapons with radar and optical homing systems. It fires shells of 82 mm caliber single-handedly in manual mode. In automatic mode, it can fire single shots with an interval of 20 to 100 seconds. Firing range from 200 to 1800 meters.

The helipad occupies the entire width of the aft part of the ship. The deck helicopter Ka-27 is located in the hangar. Combat helicopter Ka-27, one of the Kamov family of anti-submarine helicopters, according to NATO classification - "Helix". The helicopter can operate in bad weather and sea conditions up to 5 points and at distances up to 200 km from the ship. The helicopter is equipped with a radar for detecting and tracking surface targets, a sonar system for detecting and tracking underwater targets, and a system for setting acoustic buoys. Weapon systems include anti-submarine torpedoes, anti-submarine missiles, depth charges, and bottom mines.

Project 11540 patrol ships (cipher "Hawk" , according to NATO codification - Neustrashimyy) - a type of patrol ships (according to Western classification - frigates) of the Russian fleet.

Project ships are designed to search, detect and track enemy submarines, provide anti-ship and anti-submarine defense of warships and vessels at sea, strike ships and vessels at sea and bases, support combat operations of ground forces, ensure amphibious landings and resolve other tasks.

In total, two ships of this project out of three laid down on the slipway were completed and entered into the Russian Navy. Both ships for 2012 are part of the Baltic Fleet. The third ship was planned to be completed according to a modified project, but in 2015 they refused to complete it, the unfinished hull will be disposed of.

Story

Design

Patrol ships of project 11540 (code "Hawk") in the final version were to replace the patrol ships of project 1135.

Construction

The lead ship of the project began construction in May 1986 at the Yantar Baltic Shipyard, and was officially laid down on March 25, 1987. It was launched on May 25, 1988. It entered service on December 28, 1990 and on March 14, 1991 became part of the Twice Red Banner Baltic Fleet, and on January 24, 1993, the flag of the Russian Navy was raised over the ship. Since February 2, 1993, the ship has been part of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy. At 1988 prices, Fearless cost the USSR budget 80 million rubles.

The second ship - "Impregnable" (later renamed "Yaroslav the Wise") - was laid down there on May 27, 1988 and launched in June 1990. On June 19 (July) 2009, it became part of the Russian Navy and on July 24, 2009, the Naval flag was raised over the ship Russian Federation.

After the laying of the "Impregnable", on the "Yantar", the construction of the third ship, the "Fog", was also started, but was later stopped. Based on the unfinished Tuman, it is planned to create an anti-submarine ship to fight non-nuclear submarines. The start of completion is scheduled for 2014.

As the head of the shipbuilding department of the Russian Navy, Captain 1st Rank Vladimir Tryapichnikov, told reporters in September 2015: “The command of the Russian Navy will not order the completion of the TFR project 11540 Tuman. Yes, this world was extraordinarily beautiful... But at that moment I would have given a lot to be in my own, maybe not so beautiful, but for that, so familiar and dear, earthly world! .. For the first time I was so scared, and I was not afraid to honestly admit it to myself ... I was completely alone, and there was no one to give friendly advice on what to do next. Therefore, having no other choice, and somehow gathering all my "trembling" will into a fist, I decided to move somewhere further, so as not to stand still and not wait for something terrible (although in such beautiful world!) will happen.

Concluding the consideration of anti-aircraft potentials, one should pay attention to the special Tartor D / Standard MR collective (zonal) defense air defense system on the American frigate. On foreign frigates of other types of air defense systems of this class, as a rule, they are not installed, although some single serial frigates - for example, the Dutch type "Jacob van Heemskerk" or the French type "Cassard" - were built in the air defense version with the mentioned American air defense system. The experience of the Falklands conflict showed the insufficient effectiveness of collective defense air defense systems and, conversely, the higher than expected combat capabilities of self-defense air defense systems: the vast majority of Argentine aircraft shot down by anti-aircraft missiles were not on Sea Dart long-range air defense systems (75 km), but on self-defense air defense systems "Seawolf", and the latter quite successfully also solved the tasks of collective defense, that is, it covered not only its own ship, but also its neighbors. For this reason, we believe that the deployment of long-range air defense systems on frigates, naturally entailing a "clamp" of other elements (on the Jacob van Neemskerk, for example, because of this, the main artillery armament had to be abandoned, and on the Cassard - to sacrifice one of the helicopters) is probably not justified. Although such examples also demonstrate that frigates are, in principle, suitable for armament with complexes created for ships of larger classes.

The views that determined the artillery armament of the ICR "Hawk" were discussed above. Here it should only be added that it is easy to install (and this is provided for) a new single-gun 130-mm gun (after it has been put into service) without redesigning the ship design. In this case, in terms of artillery weapons, the Hawk, which today is at the level or higher than that of most foreign analogues, will certainly surpass them in all respects: range, rate of fire, ammunition power, etc.

A comparison of anti-submarine weapons also illustrates the noticeable advantage of our ship even in the torpedo version of loading its universal rocket-torpedo launchers (URTPU). Domestic 533-mm torpedoes - undoubtedly more powerful than the widely used foreign 324-mm ones (Mk.44, Mk.46, Mk.50) - surpass both 550-mm French and 533-mm Italian ones in terms of range, depth of destruction and by speed. An important circumstance is that not only anti-submarine, but also anti-ship torpedoes can be used from the URTPU. Only French and Italian frigates have these capabilities, but their anti-ship torpedoes are also inferior to domestic ones. On the other hand, none of the foreign analogues is equipped with nuclear warheads of torpedoes. The unique possibility of using nuclear weapons puts the "Hawk" in an exceptional position and once again confirms the thesis about its suitability for any model of war - including nuclear, the possibility of which (not to be confused with the concept of "probability"), alas, remains, and no one can cancel she can't yet.

In the rocket-torpedo version of charging the URTPU with Vodopad-NK anti-submarine missiles, our TFR, of course, becomes even more powerful. None of the foreign ships, except for the Japanese Hatsuyuki, has weapons of this class. The American ASROC complex installed on the "Japanese" only loses several times in range to the "Waterfall", not to mention the comparison of the performance characteristics of the torpedoes used in combat units: they are incomparably higher for our 400-mm torpedo than for the 324-mm American Japanese. The impressiveness of the anti-submarine weapons of the Yastreb SKR is enhanced by the presence of the RBU, which is absent on other compared ships, decisive task defense of the ship in dead zones and active protection against torpedoes.

The aircraft armament of our ship - the Ka-27 or Ka-29 helicopter - in terms of its flight tactical characteristics (LTX) and onboard weapons is comparable only to the American SH-60 "Sea Hawk", since the good, but light machines "Lynx" or AB- 212 are in a different class and comparing them with heavy helicopters is not correct. Therefore, surpassing all foreign analogues in aviation armament, the Hawk is second only to the American frigate Oliver H.Perry - if only because the American has two of them against one of ours. However, our helicopter is seriously superior to that based on the Canadian and Japanese ships licensed American "Sea King".

The above qualitative – heuristic, at first glance – comparison is based on quantitative calculations repeatedly performed by our specialists. Behind the concepts of "worse" and "better" are specific digital data based on appropriate models and techniques. It is curious that in the galaxy of presented analogues, in our opinion, the American frigate Oliver H. Perry looks the most “pale”. It is surprising that the Americans managed to “push” this project to the gullible Australians and Spaniards. In fairness, it should be noted that the frigates of the new generation of the navies of these countries have already been ordered in Germany. MEKO-type frigates apparently have highest rating abroad, although the Germans do not build them for their Navy.

We compared the Russian TFR project 11540 with foreign analogues - "peers" (it does not matter that the years of their construction for various reasons did not coincide). Let us now venture once again to briefly compare the elements of the Hawk with elements of the latest frigates of the foreign Navy, the design of which began much later than the creation of our ship.

An analysis of the last table shows that the new generation frigates do not differ significantly from their predecessors in terms of quality. There is a noticeable tendency to contain or reduce displacement. The standard type of power plant is becoming a diesel-gas turbine plant, which in some cases allows you to increase the cruising range. Of particular interest is the diesel-gas-turboelectric power plant of the English frigate "type 23", which makes it possible to drastically improve this element. The number of crews is slightly reduced.

Weapons (not weapons, but weapons) almost do not change. There is only an increase in the main caliber of the AU and an almost massive transition to fixed vertical launch launchers for missiles, which was carried out in our fleet almost 20 years ago.

Along with this, of course, there are changes in architecture, especially related to STEALTH technology (the most typical examples are Norfolk and La Fayette). Surface structural protection is being introduced more and more widely, mainly with the use of armored plastics such as Kevlar. Electronic weapons are being improved, especially hydroacoustic ones: infrasonic noise direction-finding sonar systems with flexible towed extended antennas (cable type) are widely used on ships. It should be noted that in the TFR project 11540 it was planned to place a similar GAS of the Centaur SK type, but the development of the latter was stalled by the collapse of the military-industrial complex that began during the "acceleration" period, and the ship had to be armed with a conventional towed station, which is part of the Zvezda-M1 complex.

Against this background, the TFR "Hawk" retains almost all of its advantages and advantages, even without the re-equipment indicated in the table (RCC "Onyx", 130-mm AU). The only, perhaps, "annoying" element is the cruising range - in modern comparison, it is already significantly smaller. Here one cannot fail to recall the requirements of the specialists of the Central Research Institute of VK, who were able to look 20 years ahead.

We don’t know how successful this was, but we tried to prove to the reader that the main character of this story is a Hawk-class patrol ship. project 11540, - created by the labor and efforts of domestic scientists, designers, engineers, workers, military sailors, has every reason to become not an ordinary ship of the Russian fleet of the XXI century. In any case, we believe in it.

From the editors of Courage. Since the article was written back in 1996, I would like to supplement it with the following information. The construction of patrol ships pr.11540 was organized at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. Three buildings were laid: in March 1987 "Undaunted" , in May 1988 - "Impregnable" and in March 1990 - "Fog" . By that time, the “parade of sovereignties” had already begun, and in 1991 the USSR collapsed, the established ties in the defense industry were disrupted, and an economic crisis was brewing. The first ship was nevertheless handed over to the fleet in 1993. But the construction of the other two had to be suspended with technical readiness of 78% and 28%, respectively. The hulls of the ships were mothballed and laid up at the factory wall. Despite attempts to complete one of the ships under the export project 11541 Corsair, potential customers did not show interest in it, and therefore the matter was limited only to the project and some progress in construction. Only after a few years, in 2003, it was decided to complete the construction of the second building according to the corrected technical project for Russian fleet. However, due to the low level of funding, the ship, which received a new name - Yaroslav the Wise, was commissioned only in May 2009. The order for the third hull was apparently cancelled.

The patrol ship "Yaroslav the Wise" due to the adjustment of the project differs from the head project 11540 in the presence of some systems. First of all, he received the Uran anti-ship complex (this SCRC was never installed on the Neustrashimy) controlled by the Dubrava radar, more advanced communications, and the GLONASS space navigation system. It carried out a number of activities aimed at further reducing the levels of underwater noise, secondary radar, thermal and electromagnetic fields, and improved the gas exhaust system. Service

Since joining the Navy, the ships of the project have repeatedly participated in various exercises, including joint exercises with NATO;

Accompanied the official visits of the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin to London and Lisbon, ensuring security on the Russian side;

Made friendly visits to the ports of France, Spain, Belgium and other states;

During the service, the crews of the ships of the project were repeatedly awarded with various prizes in the competitions of the Baltic Fleet and the Russian Navy.

In September 2006, the Fearless TFR took part in the event for the reburial of Empress Maria Feodorovna (the watchman met and accompanied the Danish KVMS ship Esbern Snare with the ashes of the Empress).

In July 2010, it was reported that the ships of the project in 2011, after agreeing on this issue with Ukraine, will be relocated to the Black Sea Fleet and will be oriented by the Black Sea Fleet command to maintain the operational regime in the fleet's area of ​​​​responsibility - the Black and Mediterranean Seas. However, the transition did not take place, although both patrol boats frequently appear in the Mediterranean and off the Horn of Africa.

From December 7, 2011 to February 10, 2012, he participated in a joint campaign of the inter-naval joint group in the Mediterranean Sea, led by the Admiral Kuznetsov TAVKR.
